Fireplace Hearths – FAQ
A fireplace hearth is the non-combustible base installed beneath and in front of a fireplace or stove. It protects the floor from heat and sparks while also serving as a decorative feature.
Yes. Building Regulations in the UK (and many other regions) require all solid-fuel appliances to sit on a non-combustible hearth of a specified thickness and size. This ensures both safety and compliance.
Common materials include slate, granite, marble, limestone, glass, concrete, and porcelain. Each offers different styles, heat resistance, and maintenance requirements.
Hearth dimensions depend on your stove/fireplace type and whether the appliance is freestanding or inset. Generally, the hearth must extend at least:
- 150mm (6 inches) to the sides of the stove
- 300mm (12 inches) in front of the stove door
The Firefly Team will confirm exact requirements based on regulations and your appliance.
Absolutely. Hearths come in a wide variety of shapes, finishes, and materials to complement both modern and traditional interiors. Bespoke designs are also available.
Yes, in many cases a 12mm decorative hearth can be installed flush with the floor, providing the appliance is tested and approved not to exceed 100°C at the base. This creates a sleek, modern look.
Costs vary depending on size, material, and customisation. Standard hearths are usually more affordable, while bespoke natural stone or premium finishes will be higher in price.
