Your New Wood Burning Stove

Thank you for purchasing your new wood burning stove from Firefly. Below are some important notes regarding the operation of your stove. Please take time to read through them and feel free to get in touch should you have any questions.

  1. Quality of fuel. It is very important to select the right fuel.Always burn properly seasoned logs.The moisture content should be below 20% and moisture meters are available to check this. Kiln dried logs from a reputable supplier are recommended.

  2. Chimney sweeping:Your new stove has been installed with a stainless steel flue liner or an insulated twin wall flue system.To prolong the life of this and ensure efficient operation of the stove it is recommended that you have your flue swept at least once a year and if burning smokeless coal (anthracite) then more frequently.

  3. Emission of fumes on initial burning: The new stove has been painted with a heatproof paint in the factory and this paint has been only partially cured.The final curing will happen during the first 1 or 2 burns and once the body of the stove reaches it’s operating temperature.The stove will then emit an odour, and you may see fumes/smoke arising from the stove; this is normal and happens with every new appliance.You may wish to ventilate the room and keep young children away during this time.

  4. Carbon monoxide alarm:We have supplied a CO alarm with your appliance.This is a legal requirement and you should not remove the alarm from the position it has been installed in. CO is an odourless gas which is highly toxic. In the event the alarm sounds then open the windows and vacate the property until the alarm ceases. Please then get in touch with us and don’t use the fire until we have inspected and tested it to find out what has caused the problem.

  5. Ash: We recommend burning wood on a layer of ash.You may allow the ash to build up within the stove to a depth of 1-2 inches before it should be emptied. If the ash level is too high the combustion air holes could become blocked and the stove will no longer burn correctly.

  6. Smoke entering the room:Very rarely you may experience a chimney downdraft.This happens on certain days when the temperature outside is low and atmospheric pressure is such that instead of the flue gases rising up the flue they come back down and exit via the stove. If this happens you can either extinguish the fire, or add newspaper and firelighters to quickly increase the temperature within the flue to reverse the down draft. If this happens repeatedly please let us know as there are alterations we can make to the flue system to prevent this re-occurring.

  7. Instruction booklet: operating instructions for your particular appliance will have been left by the installer.This will explain the functioning and air controls which differ from appliance to appliance. Please call us if you are unsure of any aspect of the operation of your wood burner and we will be happy to help.

  8. HETAS certification: we will register your stove and flue liner installation with HETAS and local authority building control to confirm it has been installed in accordance with building regulations 'Approved Document J'. HETAS will then post a certificate direct to your home.This usually takes between 2 and 3 weeks to arrive.

  9. Guarantee: Our workmanship is guaranteed against defects for 12 months from the date of installation. In the unlikely event you experience a problem then please do get in touch.Your stove may also come with an extended warranty from the manufacturer, therefore do make sure to register your stove with them.

  10. Payment:We ask that you pay the outstanding balance of your invoice on completion of the stove installation. Please don’t wait to receive the HETAS certificate before settlement.
