Defra-Approved Log Burners
A wood-burning stove isn’t just about heat – it’s about atmosphere. That slow, flickering burn instantly makes a room feel inviting. And the good news? Modern log burners are cleaner and more efficient than ever.
All our models are DEFRA-approved and EcoDesign-ready, meaning they burn efficiently and meet current smoke control regulations. Even if you’re in central London, you can enjoy a real wood fire without breaking the rules.

TRADITIONAL WOOD BURNERS
The ambience of a traditional wood-burner crackling away on a cold winter’s night is hard to beat.
Traditional styles such as freestanding log burners still include modern features, and all stoves from Firefly are Eco-Design ready and compliant with all legislation.

CONTEMPORARY WOOD BURNERS
For modern homes, contemporary wood-burning stoves can look as much like a design piece as a heater.
With clean lines, large viewing windows and impressive energy ratings, these stoves are perfect for open-plan spaces, sleek living rooms and even stylish garden rooms.

inset wood burners
Inset wood-burners, sometimes called wood burner inserts, are designed to slot into a fireplace opening or wall recess with access to a chimney or flue.
They save valuable floor space and give a neat, built-in finish. These models burn with very efficient heat output, and perfectly suit a modern living space.

Log store wood-burners
Log-store wood burners come with inbuilt wood storage areas or have the option to add them.
As well as keeping a handy stack of wood close by, log store raises the stove higher, giving you a better view of the flames.
more wood burning stove information
A wood-burning stove works by controlling how air flows into the firebox. When you open the vents, oxygen feeds the flames, raising the temperature and creating efficient combustion.
Once lit, the stove’s thick cast iron or steel body holds and radiates heat long after the fire dies down. Some stoves also have built-in convection systems or fans to push warm air around the room, making them even more effective than an open fire.
Wood stoves have come a long way from the smoky, inefficient models of the past. Today’s EcoDesign stoves can reach efficiency ratings of 75–85%, meaning less heat is wasted up the chimney. Over time, this can lower your heating bills, especially if you have access to affordable or locally sourced wood.
Wood stoves are also a fantastic backup if your main heating fails – no electricity required, just dry logs. Wood is also a renewable resource, making it an environmentally friendly heating choice. And for many homeowners, the real joy is in the lifestyle: that quiet crackle, the natural flame pattern, the ritual of building and gathering around a fire.
Seasoned hardwoods such as oak, maple and cherry are the gold standard. They burn slower, produce hotter embers and create less smoke when properly dried (less than 20% moisture content).
Softwoods like pine or fir can be used for kindling or quick top-ups, but they burn faster and may leave more soot and creosote in the flue. Always buy Ready to Burn-certified logs or season your own wood for at least 12 months.
Absolutely – safety should always come first when it comes to log-burning stoves. Here are some top tips to reduce your risks:
- Install carbon monoxide detectors in the same room as your stove
- Ensure smoke alarms are working properly
- Use a hearth to protect flooring and carpets
- Keep flammable items at least a metre away
- Never leave children or pets unsupervised near a lit stove
- Have your chimney or flue swept at least once a year by a professional
- Use gloves or stove tools to handle doors, vents and hot parts
When used correctly, modern wood burners are far cleaner than older models. EcoDesign-ready stoves release up to 90% fewer emissions than an open fire. To burn as cleanly as possible:
- Only use properly seasoned wood
- Avoid burning wet or treated timber
- Keep the air vents open enough for a hot, bright flame (a slow, smouldering fire creates more smoke)
While burning wood does release CO2 and particulate matter into the air, sustainably managed wood is considered carbon-neutral because trees absorb CO2 as they grow. Choosing a modern, EPA-certified stove can also help minimise environmental impacts.
Yes, and it’s one of the best upgrades you can make. An inset stove fitted into an existing fireplace can improve efficiency dramatically – often from around 20% (open fire) to over 70%. Installation usually involves adding a flue liner for safety and better draw.
No, and you shouldn’t be tempted. Painted, treated or glued wood releases toxic fumes and can damage your stove.
Burning household rubbish is both illegal and dangerous. Stick to clean, seasoned wood or approved heat logs.
If you live in a smoke control area, such as Greater London, you need a DEFRA-approved stove. The good news is every stove we sell meets this standard, so you can enjoy wood burning legally and safely.
Looking for a wood burner in London? Our expert wood burner installation service covers greater London and the South East of England incorporating an initial survey, flue/chimney installation, certification and post-sale support.
In the UK, wood burner installations must follow Building Regulations Part J, which covers the safe installation of solid fuel appliances. This includes proper ventilation, correct flue or chimney sizing, and the use of fire-resistant materials around the stove and hearth.
If you’re using a HETAS-registered installer (like our team at Firefly), they can self-certify the work and provide a Certificate of Compliance, which you’ll need for home insurance and when selling your property. If you’re not using a registered installer, you must notify your local authority’s Building Control department before work begins.
Our log burner installation team handles all of this for you, so you can be confident your new stove meets all legal and safety requirements.
Firefly specialise in modern fireplaces for contemporary living. Alongside our range of log burning fireplaces, we offer bioethanol fires, contemporary gas fires and modern electric stoves from some of the world’s leading suppliers.
We do not hold copies of HETAS certificates, as these are issued directly by HETAS. Once your installation has been registered, it can take up to 4 weeks for your certificate to arrive by post.
If you're looking for more information or need to request a replacement certificate, please visit the HETAS website here https://www.hetas.co.uk/consumer/certificates-of-compliance/
If you’re unable to find your installation listed on the HETAS register, please feel free to contact us and we will investigate further
